Oprah's Snack Switch

Last week on her show, Oprah Winfrey declared that her new snack of choice is Sweet Potato Chips. Fans of the show may know that Oprah has recently talked about her struggle with weight loss and her gain of 40 pounds. "My drug of choice used to be potato chips," she said. She went on to say that she had tried switching to Blue Corn Chips, but she still could not stop at the small recommended portions. This has led her to Sweet Potato Chips. They have less fat and calories than both potato and corn chips, so you can eat more per serving. Plus, they have a richer flavor and are more satisfying than other varieties. Oprah loves this snack so much, she has been giving them away to audience members and guests!

This is not the first time Oprah has mentioned her love of Sweet Potato Chips. In May, she had guest chef Tyler Florence cook up a batch of Sage Garlic chips and the recipe is on her website.

I personally enjoy Utz Kettle Classic Sweet Potato Chips . Utz is Rachel Ray's favorite brand and is available online. Terra Chips and Seneca Foods also have their own varieties and flavors that can be found in natural food stores.

Of course, the best Sweet Potato Chips are fresh from the fry cooker, so give Paula Deen's recipe below a try. She says the seasoning blend will keep six months, but I guarantee the chips will disappear a lot faster than that! I am so glad that Oprah is spreading the word about sweet potatoes. She has always been so candid about her diet and her ups and downs. We have all been there and really empathize with her. I wish her renewed luck in her diet plan and I am sure that her new snack is just the first of many good food tips she will share.

Paula Deen's Sweet Potato Chips

In a large sauce pan or fry cooker, heat oil to 350 degrees F.

Thinly slice potatoes into round disks, thinly sliced. Fry for 1 1/2 to 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from oil and drain on a paper towel. Sprinkle with House Seasoning or sugar, to taste.

House Seasoning:

1 cup salt
1/4 cup black pepper
1/4 cup garlic powder

Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

  4. Great Site. Here in Georgia we love our sweet potatoes. We alsways have sweet potato pie instead of pumpkin. I had never tried making some of the spicier dishes before, just the sweet ones. They are really great. I love trying one of my old faves in new ways!

  6. These snacks are great for the superbowl. I am usually not that into the game, but about 40 of us gather at my neighbors house and eat and have a good time. Most of us love sweet potatoes so I am going to do some of these chips. I am making some sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and another one with rosemary. I think they will both be a hit. Thanks for all the ideas.

    A shoutout from Durham, NC
