Sweet or Savory - That is the question.

Earlier today I was making some mashed sweet potatoes and a thought occurred to me. Why are most mashed white potatoes savory, while most mashed sweet potatoes are sweetened? I understand that the word sweet is right in the name, but sweet potatoes are a lot more versatile than the name implies. Don’t get me wrong, that brown sugar yam casserole with the little marshmallows is delicious, but I wanted to go a little deeper than that today.

With that in mind I set out on the Internet to find a savory recipe and in just a few minutes I found a great meatloaf & mashed sweet potato combo that really has me intrigued. Notice that they put green peppers and salt in the sweet potatoes to compliment the meatloaf flavors. What a great idea!!

You can use your own creative style to make this recipe your signature dish. Being somewhat of a spice-aholic, I think it needs more spices. Maybe some onion powder would be tasty, or how about some roasted red pepper flakes. Oh, and I can't resist, I think I will add just a pinch of ... savory.

Happy Eating!
