Iron Chef Visits the White House

It's no secret that First Lady Michelle Obama is a fan of healthy eating and fresh grown produce.  However, it was a surprise when she made a guest appearance on Food Network's Iron Chef America season premiere to unveil this week's secret ingredient...Anything grown in the White House Garden.  You may remember that Michelle broke ground for an unprecedented organic vegetable garden in March 2009.  Now she wants the world to see the benefits of healthy eating by showcasing her glorious veggies on America's most popular cooking gameshow.  Her instructions to the chefs, show the world that veggies can be "yummy".

She also mentioned that she and the President are big sweet potato lovers and suggested the chefs might want to add one or two from the White House garden to their cooking. How cool is that?

Super Chefs Mario Batali, Emeril Lagasse, Bobby Flay, and White house executive chef Christeta Comerford were all too happy to oblige.  They used our orange-fleshed favorite in tons of new and exciting ways as the competition got under way.  Iron Chef Bobby Flay teamed up with Chef Comerford in a titanic battle against Iron Chef Batali and Chef Lagasse.  Who won?  Well, I don't want to spoil it, so I will say the real winners were; healthy eating, organic produce and of course The Sweet Potato.  You can stop by Food Network to see which chefs reigned supreme or tune in again at the times listed at the end of this blog.

Michelle looked radiant as ever in teal and orange.  Chef Batali wondered if she was trying to match his famous orange togs, but I think she was showing off her sweet potato fanhood here as well. After all, there is nothing quite as distinctly orange as our sassy sweets.  It sure is great to have fans in high places.

If you missed this outstanding episode, be sure to tune in (or set your DVRs) for one of the following re-airings on Food Network.

P.S. This isn't the first time that the White House chef's have prepared sweet potatoes for the Obamas.  They served them at the inaugural dinner.  Get the recipe here.
